Kicking off 2013
I like the atmosphere of academic libraries. Especially ones where there is a high student exchange program. I'm being distracted as I type this by two dudes whispering in French. Their volume is too low to hear, but if only...
Sidebar. Mystery man aside, I am on campus. If you arrive on campus any time after 9am or 10am, you can kiss parking nearby goodbye. Instead, since I am a "commuter" and not a real "staff/faculty" memeber, I ended up parking in what URI students call "The Plains." A parking lot much like a Target(I point this out because the other commuter parking on campus is no good. In the "Target"/Plains parking two cars can pass each other, a feat that the other lots don't allow, and there is less fighting there.) and structured much better. However, it's location is placed even further away than the Gym(The Ryan Center) and, to get back to the Library, is something I consider a hike. It's all up hill and at a casual pace takes 15 minutes, I have timed it twice this week. Once on tuesday as I got to my car before driving to Providence for a class(long story) and the second was this morning. Bring an iPod, it's a good investment.
Parking is a problem across most of the state and particularly on the campuses. If you want to consider URI Providence a campus. You park in the Dunkin Donuts Convention Center and then walk a zig-zag of eight blocks to a tall building where my class was. It doesn't stand out and isn't a straight shot to get to- a quality that URI Kingston shares. Anyways, I had to sign up for a scan card that would allow me to park for free as a student(I already bought the commuter one at Kingston for the year, which ran me $250.) Since I am on campus more this semester, it makes sense now, but most of my classes are online and so it is about time it's getting used. But, I am still limited in parking. C'est la vie.
My classes so far are ok. One of them is tricky to follow along with and, this semester in particular, it is quite experimental. My second one is clear cut but I love the professor and wish it was in person. The third, the Providence one, I think I will like and come to appreciate once I get use to the drive. My roommate drove this week and it is my turn next week. Jinkies.
It feels like Spring as Winter continues to allude and surprise Rhode Island. My best advice? Bring a coat, pack a spare pair of shoes, and always have an umbrella in your car. Gloves & hat: optional.
I have to get ready to punch in for work- my third job of which I accepted this semester and already love. I'm still getting use to how things run(Sierra, LibGuides, locations, passwords, procedures) but it will be amazing experience in the long run slash I might do my academic PFE here. Who know! Wish me luck!

After through Holidays
I am finally able to write a new blog. My first semester classes did not cease until December 18th. That week was followed by work- early I might add- and then taking the train home. Some Christmas celebrations, my own birthday, and lots of catching up with friends occured. I was home by the New Year(again, work) and then I had a week off Due to shody schedule. Working yesterday and this morning, I won't be working again until Saturday. So, I am Maine bound once more.
It you are wondering how I did this fall, I got two As and a B+. I was expecting an A in my History of Books & Printing course, but, well, it was percentaged oddly. And as far as the ALA homefront goes, I have a meeting with them this Friday to discuss a comittee as well as my Social Media Coordinator duties. So, more on that later.
Today I adventured Boston. I had a few hours between trains and I have been promising my fellow friend(and now former URI classmate(he got into Simmons)), BH, that I would meet up with him and go see Pavement Coffeehouse on Newbury, where he works.(and yes, Newbury Comics originated there) Being Maine grown, Boston is a scary beast. I started to tame it with my Thanksgiving trip when I took the Orange line, successfully, between Back Bay and North Station. And again at Christmas, where I was asked boarding advice from a train newbie. But Pavement Coffeehouse requires a walk as well as a T switch.
Normally,I GPS everything and everywhere new. I asked BH for the address while I was still in Rhode Island and had the intention to map it when I got to Boston. However, when I got there, my location wouldn't lock. Gods love the city. I walked outside and, having heard that Newbury was a fifteen minute walk, I decided walking sounded nice. And then I looked left, straight, and right and realized I had no idea which direction to head. I didn't know which way way North anymore nor what street Back Bay Station is located at. So, I made a new plan, an adventure plan; to take the Orange T, going outbound, and switch to the Green T at Haymarket. This ended up going well and, while I was paranoid at each stop, my new wheeled-suitcase makes it a sinch. From Haymarket, I followed the signs to the outbound Green T, got on, and listened for Hynes Convention Center. Once there, BH told me to continue on Newbury and my location was on the right and below the stairs. I exited Hynes and took a right onto Newbury. Counting the house & store numbers, I could determine I was headed in the correct direction. Feeling assured and more at ease, I saw plenty of stores that were worth noting for a future day. This included Newbury Comics. Lord, imagine the Doctor Who gear!
BH was waiting at the cafe, sharply dressed and, like a proper librarian, book in hand.(The Last Samurai, should you be curious) Since he works there, I asked his recommendation for coffee, which was a apple cinnamon latte(SO yummy!) and grabbed The Awakening( scrambled eggs, feta, spinach, and other stuff I can't remember at the moment). It wad a great visit. We talked about our finals, current reads, and winter break festivities. One cafe and one shoe shop stop later, I was back on the Green line headed to Government Square, Government Square to North Station and am now, snuggly, going home for the week. While home, I want to see Le Miserables, have sleepovers, read along-side my mum, and relax.
Before I leave you, I want to say a few more things 1) I am making progress towards attending King's College this June. B) I am reading The Graveyard Book(Neil Gaiman) as well as Cloud Atlas(Dave...something or other) both are brilliant. And 3 or C) Dragon Age is a wonderful BioWare product. An RPG with greatly written companions, plenty of freedom, and good graphics. I am currently a ginger dwarf named Athos. Betrayed by my brother, I have been stripped of my noble rank and wander towards the path of The Grey Wardens.
And this is where I leave you.

Christmas Comes in Pairs
I read a Cosmopolitan article about this. It was, oddly enough, the December issue. The article was written like it was aimed right at me. It talked about how many movies you see at Christmas, or sledding/ice skating/hot cocoa-ing by the fire, and how the Christmas season makes you feel like you're suppose to have that 'special someone' for Christmas & New Years Eve. That feeling that if you're not with someone, a sort of moral support, then you could face all sort of singles questions or be left out. I liked the article and here's why- it told me that all of that is
Cosmo told me that I am still that strong woman, but here I am. I go to class, work, the gym, or the movies(insert activity here) alone, just as I normally would. Then December hits. The weird thing is that, these last two years, I was in a relationship. However, neither of us wanted to budge when it came to our family so, rather than trying to make the 3 1/2- 4hr drive work, we just did our own Christmas traditions. In a sense, I was "single" or at least everyone asked about how John* and I were doing. Maybe, while we've been broken up for a while now, it could be that I remembered that this Christmas we were going to be amongst my family. Thanksgiving at one place and then Christmas at the other person's. In March, all of this changed- so even Thanksgiving was solo. But, alas, something feels like it is missing this December. And my mind is trying to tell me it is a man.
Even as I watch SNL's Christmas Episode this evening, I was just sang to by Martin Short that it is the 'lustiest time of the year.' Don't get me wrong, I am still very excited for this episode, but it still has me pondering. You're suppose to be coupled up, right?
Or maybe I am just wanting to be in England already. While I haven't requested for acceptance yet, the plans on my school's end are underway. I am trying to wait another week before just shipping off $250. Anyways..those Scottish men are beckoning in my fantasies.
I'm a steady girl, normally. I have met many people here and have become close with a few of them. Similarly, though, I feel a little separated from my friends back home and, on the other hand, my move out of Maine has made me realize that I gave up a lot of people during the last few years. As a result, I'm trying to make coffee plans with an ex, trying to reconnect with an on YM friend, and trying to get to a pub with an old theatre chum. My ex is as busy as ever(so we'll see) and my old friend feels more distant than ever. Perhaps that ship has sailed, but since we don't live far away and I will be home for a while, I want to try. As far as the theatre mate, its a matter of picking a day.
I'm not sure where my head's at. The best I can hope for is to cool my jets and connect with as many people as I can while I am home, and then see how I feel.
And for tonight, I am going to watch SNL and try not to go to extremes with this notion.

Things to watch for in December
One is this thing called The Hobbit. Stephen Colbert celebrated it for a week. There are legos for it. I guess it's a big deal. All sarcasm aside, it's a very exciting thing. I just hope the New Zealand view doesn't give me motion sickness, as I have heard it has done to viewers before. Something about the super camera is was shot with.
Other things in the, hopefully, near future includeStar Trek Into Darkness. It has Benedict Cumberbatch. Great man, epic name. Enough said. (Now go rewatch Sherlock on Netflix!)
In comedies, I want to see Playing the Field(obviously for Gerard Butler) and This is 40. Paul Rudd is hilarious and I love Leslie Mann from George of the Jungle with Bredan Fraser.
In artistry, Cirque du Soliel's Worlds Away looks absolutely stunning.
In Youtube, Hunter Davis is making a parody series, it seems, and, as he has proven before, he's very good at this. The Dark Knight Retires is the name of what he posted just this past week. If you haven't seen his Ian McKellan impersonations, make it so!
In music, McFly is pretty awesome. There's british folky, reminding me of a punky Fratellis. Both of these I share i example: A: No Worries- McFly and B: Fratellis- Flathead .
For books, I am sorely behind. But I hope this is pardonable if I tell you that finals week is here and I already want it gone. I have picked up Cataloging, Collection Development, and an intro web-based class for the Spring. I am underway for summer classes as well, speaking with my school's financial aid office as well as the international study abroad office to make my dreams come true. I was sent an email about studying for an information and library science course in London England at this place: King's College- London, England
In this program, I can also visit Scotland- a dream of mine for a long time as well as an often visiting dream(see previous blog). I could run across a number of BBC shows or actors, run a muck at Platform 9 3/4, ride once more of the London Eye. I know, I've been before, but I can't help express how excited I am that I can afford to go. *David Tennant voice* Weeeellll sort of afford to go. *my voice* I have to take out another loan I was offered, one I didn't need before. On the plus side, I was going to have to take a summer term anyways and I can't think of a better place to take it.
I feel like I'm forgetting to tell you something. Ah well. I leave you with this nugget for now: Grumpy Cat on ...

The Peruvian Wizard
I layed my head on my pillow, surrounded by brown and white quilts, and I sank into the mattress beneath me. I closed my eyes and when I opened them again, when I felt like it was morning, everything was bright. It wasn't the sun and it wasn't heaven. It was bright like the a 70s science fiction movie. Full of lush green grass and purple hills. A fair amount of mist clung to the air. I wished I knew where I was, it was all so unfamiliar. Just after that thought passed my head, a ball of light pulled through the mist. It was a tiny glow ball, golden in luminescence. When it approached, it made no sound and when I tried to speak it vanished as quickly as it had come.
Before long, I met the grand wizard. He was tall and lanky, with a face that seemed neither kind nor malicious. He was a mix of Merlins, more like the Disney cartoon version. In a low voice, he asked why I was here. I tilted my head and looked up at him, stalling for an answer. He titled his and said
"ah ha!"
to which I jumped and then froze in place.
"Niece" he spoke, "you have come along way from your princessly duties to visit."
A princess? That's who he thought I was? Okay, I can go along with that.
"Go play out back," he said. "The animals miss you. I will be along shortly."
Wondering around for the afternoon, I found myself sitting on a brick wall. Before long, I found myself seated next to a friend. I couldn't make out who it was suppose to be because their facial features were blurred, but they were of the male gender. We talked about books for a while, and our families, and many things. Then the strangest thing happened- their arms began to turn bright yellow! We both starred at them and started to laugh. Then the yellow spread to his head! How absolutely bizzare. We laughed some more- but then he couldn't laugh. He starred at me with paniced eyes, gasped three times, and then...died. Simply ceased moving and, ever so faintly, exploded- like the witches do at the end of Hocus Pocus except yellow.
Having lost a friend, I became morose in this Wizard's land. I spent the later part of the day podering, until I ended up at a tea table. The wizard was there with a bunch of empty seats and gestured that I join him. He said something, but I didn't hear him. I was in a daze. He repeated himself, a little more gruffly this time. All I could do was turn my head with a "hm?" at the end. He frowned at me.
"I asked how the petunias were, Jasmine." He laced the name with contempt. I was discovered it seemed. This cover, Disney princess, I had been pretending to be was blown. He stood and gave me a stern look before retreating to his castle on the purple hill. When he left, I had the feeling of wishing I knew where I was. The glow ball appeared in my vision, dancing before my eyes. Next to it, another friend appeared- who oddly looked like a popular Chemist- in a plaid suit. He made some jokes with me and the laughing made me feel better. Even the little bulb tinkled along. I asked the chemist what time it was and when we looked at his wrist, we noticed that his hands had started to become blue. He asked what was happening, and this time I knew. I told him
"you're going to die," he shook his head and me as if I were mad. "But it's ok, because that means you get to leave." Still he grimaced in protest. "See," I said, "your head will turn blue," and it did. "Next you won't be able to breath and you'll disappear." He gasped and when he shattered, even the glow ball left my side.
When I awoke in my bed, I had no idea where I had gone or how I had gotten back. Isn't that just the thing of dreams?
Three things to my short story:
1) The wizard, the people turning into colors/gasping/exploding was really what I saw. Just the two people, as I wrote. I have no idea what to think about that.
2) I don't watch Breaking Bad, so I have no idea how the main dude ended up as my tea-time friend.
3) Never drink hot-cocoa and Kahlua an hour before bed.
Sleep well everyone!
PS, I love magician movies- so I have this nugget for you! :D

Men, boys, and dates
I have some papers that are going to be due soon, two presentations, and two final exams. I've started most of this and will actually be postponing a handful of it for the next four and a half days(starting Wednesday) because I'm going home to surprise my mum. She has no clue. I've had the tickets for three months and have been lying for that past one. My aunt that's picking me up from the AMTRAK told the rest of my family, except her and my step dad. That actually makes for a fnny story.
So, the other night we are chatting about my work week. I just got her set up on Skype and she told me she would bring her laptop so could join them on Thursday. She suggested I get a little chicken so I could join along. Anyways, she then told me her and my step-dad would be out for Wednesday. Uh oh, I come home that day. I asked her to put my step-dad on, not on speaker phone because I didn't want to worry her about my "car troubles". So she did, and I told him to pretend like I was talking about car issues. I then had to tell him that they needed to be home by 2pm because- surprise!- I bought tickets forever ago and snagged four days of time off. He laughed and told me 'yah, you should get that checked out.' I said goodnight to my mum and have been laughing ever since.
I am looking forward to navigating Boston on foot. I think I might enjoy it more that way. I'm strange that way, not liking Boston. But the people are too solitary, I feel awkward around them. And I don't do awkward very well- I consider myself outgoing and extremely extroverted. So, this doesn't bode well for me. But, I'm going to have Heat Rises with me on the train, so I'm a happy woman.
At the end of the semester, I am having some close classmates over to celebrate a hearty semester. A friend from Boston and my Management partner who Skypes with my from Chicago will be in town, so I might as well scoop them up!
I have also been on three dates within the last three weeks, of which were with the same guy. And those, surprisingly, haven't gone where you'd expect. And its weird too because a guy(who's now a dear friend of mine) did the same thing to me back in high school. We went out, spent time together, and shared hand-holding affection. Shortly after, he said he wasn't that into me that way. Now, I'm in his shoes. This guy is my age-20s-(which is nice because I seem to attract the 30 year olds...that aren't Jason Segel!) he's sweet, odd, nerdy-ish, and driven. Maybe that's part of the problem. He's set to go to Germany next year and I am focused/centered here in my grad program for the next 1 1/2 years. Needless to say, it's been something like eleven months since I last dated. When I did, it was for two and a half years. Plans went a different way, for one reason or another, and I find myself sitting behind a huge wall that I had absolutely no idea that I had built. I'm over the last guy, but I'm not wanting to get attached to this new one. Maybe I just want to be friends, maybe I've fallen for an old friend back home, or maybe I just need some more me time. Nonetheless, I do have a pretty interesting social life to speak of. For that, I am happy. No, for that I am Thankful ;]
On that note, I'm going to turn my attention over to Nathan Fillion. I love Monday nights! I will tell you how the book is when I return to Rhode Island!

As Daft Punk Might Say, It's Been Too Long
Unfortunately I don't have any book reviews right now because most of my time is dedicated to homework, writing, and my two jobs. But, I have picked up James Patterson's TOYS and I am pretty impressed 30ish pages in! It's set in 2063 and is a sort of spy/sci-fi thriller. There are the Elites and the Humans, whom eventually go head to head. So, there's that. Movie wise, I'm trying not to fall behind but my local cinema(Cinema 8) doesn't have half of what I want to see. For example, they aren't getting Seven Psychopaths. But, they do have ARGO- which you should go see!- which was really well done and very refreshing as I knew none of the main actors(other than Ben Afleck). I intend to see Cloud Atlas & Skyfall this week. Two separate nights, one of which my school offers a lovely student discount on Wednesdays. So, when I see those, I will let you know.
In other news, I have been keeping up with HIMYM and am still- or years- quite impressed. But! A newcomer has come along to re-furnish my Monday comedy block! (Which use to consist of HIMTY, The Big Bang Theory, and 2 1/2 Men- when it was good) Now, it consists of HIMYM, Partners, and Castle. As always- Nathan Fillion is always the answer. I want to point out Partners, written by the peeps who did Will & Grace. It's quirky, has charming men (Brandon Routh), and makes me laugh. Hard. Such a destresser for my week. So give that a try.
For now, that's all I have! Hope to chat again soon!
